Saraswati was originally the goddess of rivers and of fertility, and in this role she was Vishnu's wife. Later he gave her to Brahma, and she became the goddess of knowledge, poetry and music. Saraswati is a great beauty with milky white face, dressed in white garments. Standing or sitting on a water lily, or riding a goose, she plays the vina (Indian lute). In the other two fo her four hands, she holds a book (the Vedas), and prayer beads.
